Delivering ITV’s flagship internal communications event is no small undertaking, but this certainly was one of our favourite ever projects. Speakers ranged from cultural icons such as Grayson Perry and Arianna Huffington through to big-hearted film director Richard Curtis, Brtitain’s favourite actress Sheridan Smith and World Record-breaking beatboxer, Shlomo.
Streaming Tank were charged with onsite video production, portal build, global streaming delivery to both overseas offices and within the ITV HQ, and live ingest and edits for speedy upload to the site.
The multi-camera shoot and global streaming elements were fairly straightforward, but some other areas were a little more complex. Firstly, our portal needed to integrate with the ITV’s employee intranet so the Streaming Tank web team deployed a single sign-on registration process allowing viewers to get straight to the portal without logging in twice.
Secondly, the uptake in accessing the stream of the event is notoriously high! This meant that we needed to deliver to viewers who would be accessing from a range of different IT infrastructures so we needed to deploy different streaming solutions. Our standard TSTU process sent adaptive HD streams to the US audience, but for employees watching within the London ITV office, the internal infrastructure meant that their network would crash if any more than a hundred tried to watch (and many more than a hundred did). The engineers tested out various solutions, eventually sending HD rtmp streams direct to ITV servers for onward delivery to screens and desktops.
Finally, we were tasked with getting each guest’s presentation up as a VOD session within 15 minutes of them coming off stage. Space was tight in the venue, so we set up two ingest and edit lines in a truck outside and a rapid transcoding process to make sure we hit the target!
