Sheffield World Snooker Championships

Streaming Tank onsite at World Snooker Championship to deliver Outside Broadcast Services for Eurosport

Tickets for the Betfred World Snooker Championship, held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield always sell like hotcakes. And 2017 was no different.

Sheffield, known as the ‘Home of Snooker’, celebrated it 40th year of hosting the tournament in April this year. Streaming Tank has not been around quite so long! But we have been delivering Outside Broadcasting trucks and streaming services to Eurosport from the event since 2015.

The Crucible – small, confined, and somewhat old-fashioned in its facilities – might seem an unlikely choice for such a prestigious event, but it creates the perfect atmosphere for the tournament. However the size constraints mean that even the host broadcaster, BBC, have trouble fitting in their broadcasting crew and equipment, choosing to host the majority of their program schedule from the confines of Sheffield’s Winter Gardens. Likewise, there also little or no room for other broadcasters, including partner broadcaster Eurosport!

Eurosport host their event studio back at the main HQ in Feltham, London, but they of course need live footage from the Crucible! Our role is to deliver important parts of the programme content that viewers see on Eurosport E1 & E2. Streaming Tank’s Outside Broadcasting team squeeze in by The Crucible and take the live content in the form of:

  • ‘Show openers’ – studio to the on-site presenter, Matt Smith
  • Post-match interviews with players
  • Slo-mo, colour, audience reactions and much more…

Technical Solution

Content needs to be delivered with very low latency (a max of 1 second delay) so that the on-site reporter can have an easy 2-way conversation with the off-site studio. Typically, this is only achievable with a very expensive 2-way link. However, the Streaming Tank OB trucks have the requisite mix of kit to allow us to deliver the required solution within tight budget constraints.

For the project we provided the use of:

  • LiveU’s LU700
  • LiveU’s Roof mounted Xtender
  • Fiber to SDI conversion
  • Studio talk back (IFB)
  • Ka-Satellite connnectiity and more…

The Streaming Tank OB team were on site streaming live and pre-recorded content for the full 19 days. Daily average viewing figures on Eurosports E1 during the Final week of the World Snooker Championships were an amazing 547,000!
