360 degree Live Streaming of VR Interviews for Samsung’s ‘Step Into Rio’

360 degree live streaming moves forward again.

Samsung recently hosted the world’s first live virtual reality interviews from British House during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Streaming Tank were brought in by stellar advertising agency M&C Saatchi as a technical partner – alongside our friends at Atticus –  to get it done.

Up until now, 360 degree live streaming experiences have been a one-way broadcast (a viewer consuming an experience) so stream delays of 30-60 seconds have been palatable. But this event was based around real life conversations, so we needed a much quicker solution. Streaming Tank’s Phil Andrews, who delivered the onsite tech in London sums it up,

“The technical precedent for this project was something we were keen to set. Other 360 apps before were focused on pulling their content from a CDN or having it pre-installed for on-demand. Our challenge was to get this going directly into the headset, LIVE with little delay, having audio and video in sync… Using established techniques and development in Samsung Gear’s workflow, we were able to accomplish a delay of 2 seconds with 360 degree live streaming, creating the ability for a real-time interview with the athletes”

Deploying Samsung Galaxy S7 with Gear VR headsets (on the heads of journalists), the solution bridged the thousands of miles from London to Rio – it allowed UK media to interview Olympic legends such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir Steve Redgrave without looking for their passport. As the great cyclist himself noted,

“It’s incredible to experience how technology can make you feel like you’re in the same room whilst thousands of miles apart. As someone who has spent a lot of time on the road, you can totally see the future potential for bringing people together.”
