The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship is now into its 30th season and travels all around the world. 2017 has seen the Streaming Tank team travel to countless locations, but let’s take a closer look at one race. The 2017 Dutch round took place in Assen, so off went a 2 man team in one of our Outside Broadcast Services fleet, travelling a little slower than the bikes though!
Eurosport is a broadcast partner of Dorna Sports, the international sports management business which holds the exclusive global rights to the FIM World Superbike Championship (SBK). At many race locations, British Eurosport do not deploy an onsite studio. Handily, we’re on hand to deliver additional content pieces for their broadcasts!
It’s magic to be able to watch the racing in real time on the telly and when the winner crosses the line we all cheer, but viewers want a little more. Live interviews with the winners and losers, emotional reactions to crashes, behind-the-scenes gossip… that’s the extra content that Streaming Tank are relied upon to get to the viewers on EuroSport E1 & E2
At the Assen track the OB team were based somewhere around the back in the TV compound. In terms of getting the feed into the truck, the crew installing an RF camera system on the infield. This allowed us to have a roaming camera taking interviews from the grid, throughout pit lane and beyond into the paddock. As the truck comes with an integrated Cobham H.264 COFDM HD Transmitter and Broadcast Receiver Decoder System, this is something we can deliver easily and at low cost.
The track-side feed is then routed via a fibre network back to the OB truck, and then transmitted back to the UK via LiveU across multiple paths for redundancy.
