The recent launch of a new online media streaming service could be a sign of things to come for Web TV, according to industry experts.
Utilising a cluster of net-based computers, FilmOn streams high quality movies to users over a basic broadband connection. This process is made possible by the shrinking of high quality images to enable them to be sent down narrow pipes.
FilmOn offers over 7000 films and documentaries, many of which are free. New releases will be available for £3.99 for which users will be able to stream for upto 24 hours after purchase. In addition to this, there is a YouTube style section where users can upload their own content to the site.
In an interview with the BBC, Empire magazine's executive editor Ian Nathan commented on the new service stating that it could have a similar impact on the film industry as it has had on the music business.
"Computers are becoming more like TVs and I think (video streaming) is the rental market of the future. It will be interesting to see how this affects, say, Sky Movies. They may well have to become a downloadable service to compete."
“People were sceptical about music downloads, now it's the norm. I think video on demand might curtail the sale of DVDs, much in the way online is killing off CD sales."
Eventually, the site plans to offer a community content function, which akin to YouTube suggests similar content which users may like based on their choices. Also afoot are plans to integrate the platform’s HDi technology into set top boxes, and even mobile over the 3G network.
A spokesman for Digital Utilities, one of the sites partners commented: "We're providing a true television experience, as opposed to a just a computer service. It doesn't matter what you're viewing it on - PC, laptop, or mobile - you're still receiving broadcast quality visuals. This is the evolution of television."
The sites creator, Alki David has stated that FilmOn is a reflection of a clear shift of viewing habits:
“The way we watch film is changing. People used to dress up to go out to the cinema. Then it was a trip to the video store. Now you’re at home with your plasma TV and an internet connection.”
Streaming Tank are a leading provider of Web TV and media streaming services, having provided webcasting to a host of established organisations. Director James Wilkinson commented:
“The way we consume media is changing, with more and more people turning to the internet for films and other video content. The launch of FilmOn is a reflection of the demand for online video streaming services and this is only set to become more apparent as Web TV becomes more widely available through platforms such as set top boxes and mobile.”
