Comedy fans turn to Web TV

A recent article in the Times highlighted that TV audiences are becoming increasingly fragmented, with more and more people now favouring video streaming on the web as opposed to traditional TV viewing. As a result of this, more and more broadcasters are making video streaming content available online.

Channel 4 was one of the first to react to the trend, by offering viewers the chance to watch episodes of shows such as the cult classic, Peep Show, on their 4OD platform.

In response to this, the BBC has decided to revamp its current comedy website in order to tap into the demand for online video streaming.

It is thought that the rise in the number of people having access to mobile broadband is also a factor in the rise in popularity of Web TV, with users now able to access the internet from almost anywhere.

James Wilkinson of Web TV specialists Streaming Tank had this to say: “It is not surprising that more and more people are choosing to watch video content on the web, as opposed to sitting in front of their TV sets.”

“With web TV, you can watch the programme you want to see, whenever you choose, without being confined to the scheduling chosen by the major TV networks.

“Cult comedy shows will always be in demand, and web TV allows people greater access to them whenever and wherever they please.”
