Broadcasters must
implement Web TV or face being left behind
Broadcasters risk being left behind by their
competitors, unless they integrate
WebTV
services into their offerings, according to
webcasting specialists, Streaming Tank.
In a recent article published on the
ft.com
entitled “The web revolution will be televised”,
author Chris Nuttall comments: “Cable and
satellite companies need to work out a way of
bringing the web revolution to their TV services
fast or face being trampled underfoot by
internet innovators.”
One such innovator is Sling Media, whose popular
Slingbox device has helped thousands of viewers
to stream video live from their set top boxes to
computers, via the web. Sling’s latest
innovation, the Slingcatcher, has been designed
to go the opposite way, by streaming live video
on a television set through a broadband
connection.
Addressing the recent New Teevee Live Conference
in San Francisco, Sling Media’s Chief Executive
stated that the traditional cable and Satellite
broadcasters are not doing enough to accommodate
the growing demand for web TV services.
However, amidst this call for advanced web TV
services is a warning from history. 10 years
ago, Microsoft realised the potential of
webcasting, and in response launched its own web
TV service. Due to the fact that this was based
on a slow dial-up connection service, with
unwieldy remote controls and simple
applications, this was a flop.
Today, however, with the wide availability of
super-fast broadband, wii-esque controllers and
high definition, all of the necessary tools are
there for broadcasters to implement web TV
services.
James Wilkinson of Live media streaming
providers, Streaming Tank commented on the
report by stating: “There is no doubt that web
TV will play an integral part in the future of
television. Broadcasters should indeed look to
integrate the internet as part of their
offerings, but should also ensure that they have
the necessary technology to support this.”

organisations to integrate web TV services. To
