Streaming Tank help make the UK Sonisphere festival an online success

This year’s Sonispere festival from Knebworth took place in early July and Streaming Tank were on hand to ensure the first ever live streaming of this international event went without a hitch.

Kilimanjaro and AEG have teamed up with K2 Agency to create Europe’s touring rock festival brand, Sonisphere, with events taking place in Poland, Turkey, France, Finland, The Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Sweden, Spain and the United Kingdom.

On the UK leg of the tour artists such as Slipknot, Motorhead, Parkway Drive, Masodon and Opeth performed to massive crowds both at the festival and online, as for the first time in its history Kiimanjaro wanted the event to be live streamed from Knebworth.

This was no simple live streaming task though, as Streaming Tank was soon to discover.  Before the festival even began Streaming Tank worked with the organisers to get artist permissions on the live stream, so that it would not only appear on the main Sonisphere website, but to additionally ensure that the individual artist performances would live stream only onto their own sites.

As the permission came in from each artist Streaming Tank produced up embed code for each of the respective websites, which included server side countdown clocks to their performance.  Encoder graphic overlays were also created for each act for both the main site and the artist sites.

During the actual festival Streaming Tank then deployed two teams, one which worked alongside the event organisers, production and satellite teams at Knebworth while the other one was based at the BT Tower in London controlling the encoders, graphical overlays and internet connectivity for the live stream.

It really was a team effort in the end, with BT as primary streaming sponsor supplying a video satellite truck, Blink TV handling the production ensuring there was no crossover of artists and switching the video and audio feed so that Streaming Tank received one feed for encoding while Event Geeks provided the internet connection for web control at Knebworth.

The result was a festival which turned out to be an amazing success, with the online message about the live stream going viral with hundreds of thousands of hits.  Compliments about the feed also rolled in on chat and bulletin boards centred around the festival and Streaming Tank are already organising for next year’s event, due to take place between the 6th and 8th July 2012.
