Streaming Tank ensure Powerplay Golf’s inaugural event is a success
The World’s first ever Powerplay Golf tournament took place on the evening of the 30th May 2011 at one of the UK’s finest golf courses, Celtic Manor in Wales, and live streaming specialists Streaming Tank were on hand to ensure the event was broadcast live and online to golf enthusiasts in 30 countries from around the world.
Powerplay Golf (PPG), ‘Driven’ by SAAB, is an exciting new points based golfing format which takes place over nine holes, with each of the greens consisting of two flag positions, one which is relatively easy (a white flag) and the other difficult (a black ‘powerplay’ flag).
Each golfer then has a choice to earn extra points for trying to putt into the ‘Poweplay’ hole; however the amount of times they can do this is limited, so they must choose wisely on each hole. The golfer’s only score the extra points for net birdies or better, so they also risk losing points by getting it wrong, therefore creating an added element of pressure.
In this inaugural event we saw famous players both old and new, and it was open to male and female golfers alike. Ryder cup stars Ian Poulter and Paul Casey and legends such as Gary Player and Ian Woosnam, along with other well known golfing names were in attendance, but ultimately it was the ladies who adapted the best to the format, with the event being won by Caroline Hedwall on 32 points, with two other lady golfers coming 2nd and 3rd.
Streaming Tank worked on behalf of Powerplay Golf, IMG and European Tour Productions to live stream the event worldwide, including streams onto both the Powerplay website and Powerplay Facebook page. Due to television rights, the live stream could only be made available to specific countries, with Geo-location blocking being lifted at different times depending on different countries rights agreements.
Once the tournament ended Streaming Tank also provided an On-Demand video of the whole event and edited highlights, which were subsequently streamed live into a separate Streaming Tank MicroTV and onto the Powerplay YouTube site. The event resulted in success for all involved and as a result Powerplay Golf are currently organising at least 3 more events in 2011 and multiple tournaments in 2012.
