Crisis in Video Email Campaign

Homeless charity Crisis recently used a video email campaign to encourage people to “throw their boss out of a plane at 10,000 feet”1. But this wasn’t an attempt to persuade people to knock off unpopular bosses all over the UK; it was part of a national fund raising event where businesses where offered the opportunity to partake in a once in a life time experience and to raise money the homeless at the same time.

In a partnership with professional event organisers Skyline, Crisis will be raising funds to help homeless people fulfil their potential and transform their lives.   In order to promote the event across the UK, Crisis approached video streaming experts Streaming Tank to help market the event via a video email campaign.

Managing Director of Streaming Tank, James Wilkinson said:
“In order to get around Microsoft’s security measures, which means Flash or video content cannot be displayed in emails; we created an animated gif which tempted users to click through to view the entire promotional video. The video email also featured a ‘forward to a friend’ feature, which has the benefit of allowing the promotion to be passed around more potentially interested parties.”

The full video was encoded in Flash to ensure cross browser and cross platform compatibility and then ‘true’ streamed with ‘auto sensing’ which detects the user’s bandwidth before delivering the best version of the video stream to them.  This method is perfect for email marketing as it ensures that quality video content is delivered to the end user, regardless of the speed of their internet connection.

James Wilkinson of Streaming Tank added:
“This campaign worked very well and the results were a huge increase in the emails click through rates.”
