Sandi Thom

Project Objectives

In 2006, Streaming Tank were approached by Sandi Thom, an unsigned singer songwriter from Aberdeenshire in Scotland. Fed up with touring the UK in a car which kept breaking down, Sandi came up with the idea of using the internet to perform in front of a global audience.

Her plan was to use her basement as a studio and perform 21 successive evening gigs from her flat in Tooting, the live performances shown on a website created for the '21 Nights from Tooting' webcast tour.

Solution

Recently returned from live streaming The Who's European tour, Streaming Tank jumped at the chance to get involved with another ground breaking project.

Streaming Tank rigged up a webcam in the basement of her Tooting flat, and set up camp encoding and streaming each one of the live performances online.

A webpage was created for the 'webcast' tour which was hosted and managed by Streaming Tank.

Result

Sandi's innovative use of the internet and video streaming generated vast amounts of worldwide publicity. The online audience grew from 70 viewers on the first night, to thousands hailing from the U.S, Russia and the Middle East.

The webcast tour culminated with Sandi signing a million pound album deal with Sony RCA, the contract signing happening in the final webcast.

Sandi's first single 'I wish I was a Punk Rocker' went straight in at No. 1 and knocked Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' off the top spot.
