BBC (Proximity London)
Project Objectives
The BBC were launching a campaign to encourage students to pay for their TV licenses. Promixity London came up with a concept for a website which was intended to create awareness of the TV license requirement throughout the UK, by uniting the universities through a UK wide online competition.
Solution
'It's not funny.co.uk' was a free website designed for students to share jokes by video or text. A competition ensued to find the 'unfunniest' university in Britain, with the university with the most votes winning a comedy night with Bill Bailey and Simon Amstell.
Streaming were brought in by Proximity London to implement the user-generated streaming technology to enable students to upload their own 'joke' video clips.
The site also incorporated secure registration and log-in facilities, as well as moderation and voting functionality. Users were able to submit jokes in a variety of video formats which were automatically encoded and then placed in a queue for moderation, or submitted via text.
Result
The campaign was a great success with thousands of jokes being submitted and voted for over the course of the campaign. The University of Teeside emerged as the unfunniest university and winners of the comedy night.
