Has Video Streaming changed the way we View Rock and Roll?

The love of music is something that the majority of us have in our hearts. From an early age, we listen to our parent’s favourite tunes and as we grow, we develop our own tastes. Buying our first CD (or record if you are as old as I am) is almost a right of passage and starts our music collection. Radio and music television also heavily influence and feed our love for these aural delights, which leads into live music.

Nothing compares to the thrill of seeing your favourite band or artists perform live. In fact, for many of us it allows us to get close to the stars we love and a lot of time and energy goes into sourcing a ticket for the big event. This can however lead to frustration with tickets for large concerts selling out in record times and prices or these tickets soaring.

For some of us, it is simply not possible to get to a gig that we really want to see. This could be for many reasons, for instance, work commitments, ill health, or cost. What do we do then? Traditionally, either we would miss out or if we were lucky, the event may have been televised. Not any more however, the Internet allows us far more possibilities in terms of getting to view that all-important live event direct from our computer.

Streaming techniques allow a live event to be broadcast across the world helping to ensure that no matter where we are we can still watch it unfold. This means that we never again need to worry about missing out because as long as we have Internet access, we can see the show. Streaming video allows the Internet to become in essence, the world’s biggest stadium.

Major events and artists are using this exciting medium to broadcast their shows to the public. High profile bands such as The Who have used streaming as a method to televise their live concerts across the world. This gives millions of people like us worldwide a chance to see something they otherwise might not be able to.

Of course, there is no reason why any music event cannot be broadcast via video streaming. Anything from an orchestra to a rock festival can use it to attract large numbers of viewers the world over. It gives you and I the opportunity to get as close as we can to our favourite artist and experience the feel only a live performance can give.

Advances in modern technology are only going to further cement the use of the Internet as a way of viewing and possibly having some interaction with the stars.  Companies involved in streaming media are working hard to make sure that boundaries are constantly being pushed and methodology is updated as technology changes. One thing is for sure, as more of us use the Internet as our primary source for information and entertainment; it makes sense that more events will be broadcast in this way.
